DAASHOF PRESIDENT’S CORNER
NEW ERA FOR
SPORTS HALL OF FAME
If you don’t recognize names like “Doc” Hill, “Slew” Jackson, “Gator” Lewis and John Oates, you are probably not from Delaware or much of a Delaware sports fan. These men are just a few of our athletic legends in the Delaware Sports world and were the heroes and mentors to hundreds of young African-American athletes in the First State. They were also a part of a team of great men who founded the Delaware Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame more than 20 years ago. And it was to add these great achievers in history’s memory to inspire future generations that this organization was created.
Upon it’s inception, DAASHOF was committed to recognizing outstanding, Delaware-born athletes. This included high school, college and professional athletes, coaches and sports professionals, regardless of race. 221 people to date have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
To date, the work that these great men and so many others started can now count hundreds of awards and scholarships given. Additionally, the DAASHOF has recognized just as many deserving individuals since our start in 1996. As the seventh President in the history of this great organization, I am humbled to stand amongst these amazing trailblazers and sports heros to recognize Delaware legends.
DAASHOF has done a lot of great work and we will stretch and do even more. Noteworthy individuals and their contributions will continue to be memorialized. Young people whom are deserving will continue to be supported through financial assistance to go further with their education and their athletic gifts. But this is only the beginning.
I see us:
- Increasing the number of women that are honored and inducted into the Hall of Fame;
- Augmenting our enrollment of younger members to support the good work of our organization;
- Expanding our giving to reach more student recipients;
- And, further growing our scholarship funds in order that we can help more students realize their dreams.
Come join us as we move forward in a great work.
